Jeepers Creepers

Jeepers Creepers is one of the few horror movies I've seen released in recently years that features a supernatural force and is genuinely scary.

Darryl (Justin Long) and Trish (Gina Philips), siblings, decide to take the scenic country route to rendezvous with their parents for spring break. Along the way, they encounter a mean and worn truck (with the license plate BEATNGU) that almost runs them off the road. Soon, they pass by an abandoned church where they see the driver of the truck drop off objects wrapped in red-stained white sheets. As they ponder what they just saw, the truck chases them again and forces them off the road.

At this point, they have the choice of getting the hell out of whatever situation they're in. Instead, they head back to the abandoned chute, into which Darryl falls by accident. He soon discovers a horror that may eventually lead to his destruction.

Most of the fun in the film is based on the suspense that is created when it's not clear how the creature is going to attack next. The horror is based on some disturbing scenes, including one that involves decimating the creature (this also consequently leads to one of the funniest scenes in the film). There's a motivation for the creature's actions which is interesting, and also explains how the creature regenerates itself even after it is wounded.

The cinematography and the sets are well done. The acting is extremely tight. The pacing is just right. There's a plot device that involves the song Jeepers Creepers being played whenever there's danger, with several renditions of the song being used, the most effective of them being the version by Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Jeepers Creepers is a fun thrill ride; I highly recommend watching it on the big screen.
