9:30 Club, Washington, DC. October 15, 1997.
Well, I just saw Primus at the 9:30 club in D.C. and I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed. The show was incredible from start to stop. My only complaint was that they didn't play long enough. The stage setup was pretty minimal except two huge balloons hanging from the ceiling that said Primus and had the graphics from the Brown Album on them. They opened up with Pudding Time , Les was sporting a mustache and a fedora The band sounded extremely tight, especially Les's bass playing which is really no surprise. This was my first exposure to Brain's drum playing and he didn't dissappoint. He definitely has more power than Herb, maybe not as much finesse. However, he knocked off an amazing drum solo. I was also really pleased with the set list. I personally like the older stuff better and they played a good bit of it. Pork Soda and Tales from the punchbowl only had one song each played off of them, while Frizzle Fry and Seas of Cheese both had four each. As one would expect, they played 6 new songs. During one of the songs, I can't remember which, they broke into Highball with the Devil from High Ball for a minute or two before resuming the song. I would have like to have heard one or two more from that. The crowd was completely into the show from the beginning. The pit wasn't too rowdy which was cool cause I could check Les spinning circles while he worked the bass like the master that he is. All in all, I had a great time and I highly recommend checking them out. Even my friend who really never listened to Primus thought the show rocked. Check the setlist. Peace.
